Independent and Supplementary Prescribing for Allied Health Professionals

 

The aim of this module is to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of clinical pharmacology and prescribing practices. It is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the skills and competencies required to prescribe safely, effectively, and independently, in accordance with the standards set by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).


They will also explore the professional and legal implications of the developing role of health care professionals in prescribing/supplying medicines, thereby meeting the standards set by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s competencies for all prescribers (RPS, 2016)  and by the HCPC for all prescribers (HCPC, 2016)

 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be registered with the HCPC in one of the relevant Allied Health Professions

  • Ability to study at Level 7

  • A clearly identified need for prescribing within your current clinical practice

  • Support from your employing organisation

  • A designated prescribing clinician (Designated Prescribing Practitioner - DPP) who:

    • Is a doctor or independent prescriber

    • Has been prescribing for a minimum of 3 years

    • Is currently actively prescribing

    • Can supervise you over the 6-month period

  • Evidence of medicines and clinical governance arrangements in place to support safe and effective prescribing

  • At least 3 years of relevant post-qualification experience in the clinical area in which you intend to prescribe

  • If self-employed:

    • Must demonstrate how you intend to prescribe in your application

    • Have at least 1 year of experience in the field in which you intend to prescribe

    • An identified need for prescribing in your current role must be verified by a manager or lead clinician

  • Achievement of the ‘Clinical Reasoning in Physical Assessment: Lifespan Perspectives’ 30-credit Level 6 module, or equivalent certificated learning
