• IN PERSON sessions will be held at the PCS Building,160 Falcon Road, London, SW11 2LN. This venue is by Clapham Junction Train Station.
• Zoom sessions you will need access to a working computer with internet access and sound. You will be required to be on camera, these sessions will be highly interactive so be ready to be engaged.

Course Contents of 7 Day Essential Skills for HCAs and HCSWs.

7 days spread over the course of 4 months

The first 3 days will consist of the learners undertaking the Care Certificate.  The 3 Day Care Certificate training for new/relatively new health care support workers (HCSWs), health care assistants (HCAs) and phlebotomists working in the primary and social care settings. Since April 2015 all new unregistered staff working in all sectors of health and social care are expected to undertake an induction programme covering the 13 standards of the Care Certificate, which embed the attitudes beliefs and behaviours expected within these sectors, before they practice unsupervised.

This training programme has been developed specifically for new recruits to the primary and social care setting and is delivered  by trainers who have many years experience,  fully understand the roles and expectations of these invaluable members of the team, and are all  highly experienced trainers. The programme will cover all the non-mandatory statutory standards of the Care Certificate in a supportive interactive classroom setting and will support and instruct learners to complete the programme in a timely manner. Any learners who have not completed their statutory mandatory training will be signposted to available resources within their work setting.

Learners will then take part in 3 more sessions over 4 days which include an introductory training into Wound Care, Physiological Measurements and Treatment room management.

The first day will be a training day on Treatment Room Management covering the safe practice, ordering and stock rotation, fridge monitoring and the cold chain as well as the keeping of equipment, calibration and cleaning requirements and logs. Finally the learners will be taught safe waste disposal, emergency calls and personal equipment and protection.

The basic introduction into Physiological Measurements and Hypertension includes teaching of the AP of the circulatory system, prevalence and risk factors, and signs and symptoms. Additionally differences between hypotension and hypertension along with the benefits of maintenance of control, health promotion and signposting will be covered and the practical side of the session includes taking accurate BP measurements.

The last day – an Introduction into Wound Care will give a basic introduction into simple wound aseptic techniques, AP of skin, types of wounds and how they may be sustained. There will also be a practical element to this day where and effective hand washing, aseptic and clean dressing changes of wounds will be covered as well as looking at equipment and different types of dressings.
