About the event

This session aims to raise awareness among primary care staff about the importance of speaking up and will include an overview of expectations and implementation of the national Freedom to Speak Up policy and the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian role. It will cover successes and challenges to help inform a broader discussion about barriers, learning, and required improvements.

This session will cover:

  • The national Freedom to Speak Up policy and its significance in fostering an open and learning culture.
  • Clarifying speak up routes, responses and protections.
  • Explaining the roles and responsibilities of FTSU Guardians.
  • Recognising concerns: identifying and addressing workplace issues.
  • Creating a Speak-Up Culture: Highlighting the importance of openness, trust, confidentiality and feedback.

Lorraine Turnell is working with SWL Training Hubs to help inform developments about Freedom to Speak Up (FTSU) policy and practice, including FTSU Guardian support for primary care staff. Lorraine is passionate about fostering equitable, kind, and inclusive cultures that support learning and improvement, enabling people to deliver their best and have a great experience at work. After her time as Head of Legal Services at Protect, the national whistleblowing charity, Lorraine worked for the National Guardian’s Office where she helped develop and deliver its early strategic objectives, policy, training, learning, and guidance on FTSU. Lorraine is a Solicitor and has an MSc in Human Resource Management and Development (International Development).
