Advanced Practice Programmes
The Advanced Practice Programmes are suitable for nurses, pharmacists, paramedics and physiotherapists.
What is Advanced Practice?
Advanced Practice is delivered by experienced, registered health care practitioners. It is a level of practice characterised by a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making. This is underpinned by an academic level 7 master’s level award or equivalent that encompasses the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research, with demonstration of area specific clinical competence. Advanced Practitioners come from a range of professional backgrounds such as Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, and the Allied Health Professions. During the Advanced Practice Programme, employers should anticipate that 80% of trainees time will be training in their work place with 20% at University.
Expression of Interest
SWL Training Hub are seeking expressions of interests for Advanced Practice training for potential new learners under the following training pathways:
Advanced Practice Master of Science (MSc)
Advanced Practice apprenticeship (Academic level 7)
Top-Up modules required to convert a NHSE-funded Advanced Practice PGDip to a full MSc
Overview of the Expression of Interest (EOI) Application Process
Expressions of Interest from employers are welcome throughout the year.
Applications to express an interest must be submitted to the local Training Hub representative using the below application form.
After it has been reviewed locally, the local Training Hub will pass it to SWL Training Hub
If the application satisfies all necessary criteria, SWL Training Hub will submit the application to the NHSE Workforce Training and Education (WTE) London Regional Faculty for Advanced Practice to seek funding approval.
NHSE WTE will confirm the outcome of the funding approval with SWL Training Hub
SWL Training Hub will inform the locality Training Hub contact of the outcome. If the outcome is successful, the applicant will be advised to apply directly to the chosen HEI’s (Higher Education Institution) Advanced Practice programme.
Before applying, applicants should share this email and the supporting documents and links with the employer. Applications must be employer-endorsed, aligning with organisational workforce planning.
Review the list of NHS England accredited programmes on the HEI excel spreadsheet (linked below).
For Applicants:
Fill out all required of the EOI/Application Form fields. Incomplete applications will be rejected. Pay special attention to specific guidance for questions 1, 13, 14, and 15.
Include a personal statement and obtain additional supporting statements from your supervisor and employer, addressing your suitability and their support (see questions 30, 31 and 32)
For Employers:
Supporting your ACP trainee is crucial. In addition to providing a supporting statement within the main expression of interest application form, please complete the employer section of the NHSE WTE Employer and Primary Care ACP Readiness Checklists to ensure your organisation is prepared to fully support ACP trainees, covering educational supervision, work-based learning, and study leave.
This checklist should be submitted with the main application.
Supervision:
Good workplace-based supervision is a key factor for successful completion of Advanced Practitioner training. Trainees who are not well supervised can struggle and some have failed to complete their programmes. Each trainee Advanced Practitioner requires a named workplace coordinating educational supervisor (with possible associate supervisors depending on trainee need) who can undertake multi-professional supervision and is familiar with the learning requirements of Advanced Practice. Supervisors must have protected time in their job plan to support the trainee.
Submission to the Locality Training Hub
Please ensure that the following documents are submitted to your locality training hub:
Completed EOI/Application Form (this form also requires the applicant, employer and supervisor to provide supporting statements).
Completed NHSE WTE Employer and Primary Care ACP Readiness Checklists
The expression of interest process will remain open all year round.
