Shared Decision Making

Please note this course is delivered over 2 sessions. The first on Thursday 6th February 2025 between 13:00 and 16:30 and the second on Thursday 20th February 2025 between 13:00 and 16:30. By registering for this event you will be enrolled and expected to attend both sessions.

South West London Training Hubs are pleased to invite Clinicians to the training, Shared Decision Making, facilitated and delivered by NHS Year of Care.

This training will help Clinicians to work out how you can introduce shared decision making (SDM) into clinical practice in line with NICE and GMC guidance!

This training will be delivered to teams or groups of clinicians who work together and want to introduce shared decision making as a service improvement for the benefit of patients in line with national policy and guidance.

The approach taken will focus on how to embed changes which encompass:

Tools and systems that support people to work in partnership and to have the right information and support at the right time for the best decision.

Clinician skills and values: using core and more advanced communication skills to enable people to articulate what matters to them and work out the impact of these in health options, decisions and plans.

During this training Year of Care will:

· Consider the philosophy, benefits and components of SDM

· Work out what the key SDM “moments” are in your service

· Make plans to put in place practical changes to how things are done to embed SDM into your pathways and patient journeys

· See, practice and reflect upon the consultation skills involved in SDM

Please see below what each session entails;

Session 1 – What do we mean by Shared Decision Making?

• To introduce the whole team to the rationale for SDM and clarify current ideas and understanding.
• To explore the overall principles that underpin SDM and think about the process of making a decision and how we support meaningful involvement in decision making.
• To consider current patient pathways and which “decision” making areas you wish to focus on as a team/service.

Session 2 – The Shared Decision-Making Consultation

• To reflect upon the underpinning philosophy and values that underpins a SDM approach.
• To consider the consultations skills involved in SDM and have a go at scenarios using the skills outlined.
• To continue to work with your team on an SDM “moment” in the patient pathway/journey and an initial improvement that you will work on to      systematic include SDM.
• To give the teams time to do some work on pathways, resources and planning.
