This course is intended to give those Registered Nurses working in primary care and community settings the skills and knowledge required to undertake smears.
The course has been developed in line with the NHS Cervical Cytology Screening Programme (NHSCSP) recommendations and guidelines by NHS England.
Part 1: Theoretical Element The 2 days theoretical training addresses the major aspects of caring for clients requiring cervical cytology screening. Partnership working and clients perspectives are also explored as well as issues of professional competence, accountability and provision of evidence based care.
Part 2: Practical Element The practical element consists of: Observing a minimum of 3 smears being taken Taking a minimum of 5 satisfactory smears being taken under supervision Interim Assessment (to be completed before commencing unsupervised smears) Taking 20 unsupervised smears (maximum smears that can be taken is 25) with 100% of the results must be adequate results
Final competency based assessment performing a minimum of 5 consultations in one session done by MKM in your workplace Please note this includes one practice visit within London per candidate.
