4 day Health & Wellbeing Coaches programme
Health Coaching Skills
About the Course
The PCI-accredited courses in health coaching skills are aimed at those in ARRS roles. These training courses may also be helpful for individuals in other roles.
There is a choice of 2-day and 4-day courses.
PCI-accredited 2-day training in Health Coaching Skills
The 2-day course is required for Care Coordinators and Social Prescribing Link Workers. It is also suitable for those working in any health and social care role involving interaction with patients.
The 2-day training is generally arranged across 4 half-day sessions delivered via Zoom/Teams. There is a week between the first day (i.e. the first two half-days) of the training and the second day.
PCI-accredited 4-day training in Health Coaching Skills
The 4-day course is required for Health and Wellbeing Coaches. It is also suitable for those working with patients across a number of sessions (6-12) where coaching may form a central part of the role, e.g., Social Prescribing Link Workers or Community Navigators.
The 4-day course consists of the 2-day course, above, and is followed by 4 (2 hr) monthly group skills development sessions and 6 (45-60 min) individual supervision sessions.
Content
The 2-day training covers all the skills needed to have ‘better conversations’ within in a health or social care role, using health coaching skills to support effective self-management. It includes:
• An introduction to ‘the Personalised Care Model’ and the roles of Care Coordinators, Health and Wellbeing Coaches and Social Prescribing Link Workers.
• The role of health coaching skills to support patients to achieve the best outcomes for them, while using health and social care services wisely and effectively;
• An introduction to the bio-psycho-social model of health – aimed at the whole person;
• The PCI Core Curriculum health coaching skills including active listening skills, goal-setting, goal follow-up and motivational interviewing techniques to support effective self management and, where appropriate, behaviour change.
• An effective evidence-based coaching conversation structure that guides the use of the skills when working with patients;
• How to recognise patients at different levels of ‘activation’ and how to meet them where they are and support them around whatever’s important to them.
The second 2-days (for the 4-day training):
• Supports the ongoing development of the skills introduced in the initial training;
• Looks more closely at how to use skills to best effect to increase patients’ activation levels and support patients to optimise their health and wellbeing outcomes;
• Provides the opportunity for Coaches to explore the use of the skills in the context of their own patient caseload;
• Practical guidance on delivering health coaching as an intervention.
